In this Blog, we will explore the uses and types of Valves. But first, let’s see what a Valve is.
Valves: Description and Meaning
A valve is a device that can be used to control the flow of liquids, gases, and slurries. Also known as regulators, valves can be found in almost any situation. They are also made in a number of different designs, depending on how they are being used, and they can be found in a range of sizes from smaller than a pinky to gigantic. Valves also vary from the extremely basic to the extraordinarily complex. They are one of the oldest mechanical designs, and basic ones have been in use for thousands of years.
Now that we’ve seen what a Valve is, let’s delve into the most used Valves, how they operate and where they are used.
Ball Valve:
Ball valves are a type of quarter-turn valve along with plug valves and butterfly valves. They can be operated manually or by using an actuator. The simplest operation of a ball valve is through the use of a wrench or a lever manually turned by an operator.
How it operates: Torque is applied to rotate the lever arm by 90° by either clockwise or counterclockwise to open or close the valve. If the lever arm is parallel to the pipe, it indicates that the valve is open. If the lever arm is perpendicular to the pipe, it indicates that the valve is closed.
Uses: Ball valve is the most used fluid shutoff valve in upstream oil and gas production facilities, both onshore and offshore. They are also used in fuel gas systems feeding furnaces.
Butterfly Valves:
A Butterfly Valve is a valve consisting of a rotating circular plate or a pair of hinged semicircular plates, attached to a transverse spindle and mounted inside a pipe in order to regulate or prevent flow.
How it operates: In operation, the valve is fully open or closed when the disc is rotated a quarter turn. The "butterfly" is a metal disc mounted on a rod. When the valve is closed, the disc is turned so that it completely blocks off the passageway.
Uses: Butterfly valves are used where space is limited. Unlike gate valves, butterfly valves can be used for throttling or regulating flow as well as in the full open and fully closed position.
Strainer Valves:
A strainer valve is a pipe fitting with an attached metal, mesh, or wedge wire strainer that strains and filters liquid and separates it from solid matter.
How it operates: A valve is installed on the connection located on the strainer cap. The screen can thus be cleaned by simply opening and then closing the valve without shutting off the flow or disassembling the strainer. When the valve is opened the material trapped inside the screen drains out.
Uses: Strainer valve can be defined as a pipe fitting through which liquid is passed for purification, filtering or separation from solid matter; anything used to strain a liquid; any device functioning as a sieve or filter used to prevent solid bodies from mixing in a liquid stream or flow line.
We’ve seen the definition and types of Valves. We’ve also seen how they operate. Now, if you’ve been thinking who is the best manufacturer of Valves, you’ve come to the right place.
